Joe Breezer spent the early years of the 1970s studying design and fabrication and racing bicycles in Northern California. In 1974, he designed and manufactured his first road bike frame, by hand and in a small quantity. At the same time, he was among the first to adapt used bikes until they could be ridden off road, or better yet, downhill. On these off-road rides, most riders preferred to use ancient bikes, where at least the damage was limited if they survived only two or three rides.

But why torture vintage bikes? At one of the first downhill races, where 10 competitors competed on heavy, old steel bikes from the '30s and '40s, Joe Breezer came up with the idea of building a bike perfectly adapted to the tough conditions off of paved roads - and so set off to construct his first off-road bike in 1977.

In 1978 he built 10 of his "Breezer Series I" by hand; they are today considered the first MTBs. In the 80s, an even more aggressive, lighter model was created and named "Series II", towards the end of the decade, Breezer developed his first aluminum frame. It wasn't until the 1990s that Breezer's bikes were manufactured in factories. Mass production made the bikes much more affordable, so even budget-conscious riders could afford a bike made by Breezer.

Breezer revolutionizes bike parts

Once the MTB was firmly established in the world of bicycles, Joe Breezer began working on critical details. He took individual components and began tweaking their design. Dropouts, cranksets or rims - whatever he touched became lighter, more durable or more efficient. Many of his improvements are now standards in bicycle construction. One example: In the mid-1980s, Joe Breezer and Josh Angell developed a device that allowed the saddle to be lowered. This paved the way for the Dropper Post.

From offroad to everyday cycling

These days, mountain bikes can be found everywhere; they are the most popular bicycles and dominate sales charts. This meant that the time had come for Joe Breezer to turn his attention to a different subject. Being a true bicycle enthusiast, bicycles still are his top priority, but it is no longer a matter of introducing a new type of bicycle or revolutionizing the bicycle parts market; rather, as a progressive thinker, he anticipated what we call today "The New Mobility"! Since the late 90s, he has been committed to making everyday life in his home state of California more bicycle-friendly, he is a member of bicycle associations, designs safe bicycle routes to schools, creates bicycle maps and advocates for the expansion of the bicycle route network.

This is also reflected in Breezer's portfolio, which now includes bikes suitable for everyday use, trekking bikes, city bikes and, most recently, gravel bikes.

Adventure or Transportation?

Today, Breezer divides its bikes into "Adventure and Transportation".

For the city, there are modern city bikes like Midtown, which are perfectly equipped for an active everyday life. With Downtown, Breezer delivers a vintage bike in a men's version with a diamond frame and as a women's bike with a low entry. The transition from MTB pioneer to everyday cyclist has been really a thorough one, with only one mountain bike left in the current portfolio – Thunder, an all-terrain bike.
