It all began in 1898 with a mechanical canvas and linen weaving mill that Hans Deuter founded in Augsburg-Oberhausen. After only a short time, the manufactory supplied the Royal Bavarian Post Office with mail bags and sacks. The foundation stone of a success story was thus laid. Over the years, Deuter expanded its product range and constantly responded to current needs. Large tents, saddlebags, satchels, backpacks and suitcases were in the range. The development of the Tauern backpack may be considered a milestone in outdoor sports. The high-quality back packs were companions on the extremely strenuous Nanga Parbat expedition in 1934 with Fritz Bechtold. Hermann Buhl also carried the Tauern Backpack on his solo ascent of the legendary first ascent of Nanga Parbat in 1953. But the revolution followed, after dark times during the Second World War and in 1968 with the first presentation of nylon backpacks. The new material shortly becomes number one on the market.

In 1990, the time had finally come. The first bike backpack from Deuter was introduced and accompanied Andi Heckmair on his bike during a four-day Alpine cross on the mountain bike. As the first bike backpack really suitable for touring, the original model Bike 1 joins the cycling history.
